The Trust Bridge:
Lead Beyond the Conversation with this stakeholder engagement framework
By Tracy Jones
Some organisations are like castles. They’re surrounded by a moat that separates them from their stakeholders.
Moats are usually dug to keep unwelcome guests away. Whether you meant it that way or not, that’s often what it feels like to your stakeholders on the other side.
In the space between, the moat is filled with everything that came before you – celebrations, grievances, fulfilled hopes and broken promises. These moments become a collective cultural memory for your stakeholders, most of whom have been around for a lot longer than you have.
Like every good castle owner, you’ve probably invested in a drawbridge. Every now and then you lower it down and get to work with your dedicated community engagement officers, newsletters, annual community meetings and the occasional invitation to visit. It’s raised and lowered to a schedule you created and can only be operated from one side.
The stakeholder remains a guest only welcome when you invite them in.
But what if you built something more permanent? A structure that cannot be raised or withdrawn. One that is equally accessible from both sides and everyone feels safe crossing it.
It is built collaboratively, one step at a time. It is strong enough to carry the weight of genuine partnership, meeting both the needs of the business and the aspirations of the people on the other side.
I call it the Trust Bridge.
If you want to lead beyond a transactional relationship, you have to stop treating stakeholder engagement as a one-way conversation of convenience and start building a permanent partnership based on competence, integrity, transparency, empathy and respect.
The Trust Bridge is a practical system with proven frameworks, repeatable tools and real-world case studies. It will show you how to work out what you stand for, understand the people on the other side, plan and deliver an engagement program, keep the promises you make and measure your impact.
