After 30 years working with CEOs and boards through the unthinkable, I have seen what happens when senior leaders suddenly slam into a world turned upside down – a cyber-attack, reputational crisis, workplace fatality, natural disaster or anything else that hits hard and without warning.
Things move too fast, hurt too much and stretch leadership, systems and people to breaking point.
Crises test leadership in every way: time compresses, uncertainty escalates, scrutiny amplifies.
To be effective, you must re-establish control, make high-stakes decisions with incomplete information, maintain trust and deliberately guide the organisation from shock to stability and beyond.
You also need to know what leadership posture to adopt at different phases of a crisis to avoid leaving emergency mode too early or staying there for too long.
When leaders treat a crisis as one long, continuous event to be “managed”, the results are familiar – emergency behaviours linger long after they are useful, leaders and teams run on adrenaline until judgement starts to degrade, messages to stakeholders become inconsistent, recovery efforts drag on indefinitely and lessons learned are never properly embedded.
That’s why I built the Resilience to Recovery (or R2R) Framework, a five‑phase model that guides leaders from the first shock through to long‑term stability.
It helps leaders answer not just what to do, but when to do it and when to stop.
